STARTALK - SIPHUR 2009
Summer Intensive Program for Hindi and Urdu

India Studies Program

Indiana University
Bloomington

June 22 – July 17, 2009
STARTALK‐SIPHUR 2009 is a four week summer program which is equivalent to one semester of university‐level instruction. The program, designed for high school students, will start on June 22 and end on July 17, and offers classes at two levels: beginning for new students and intermediate for continuing students. Our goals are for the participating students to acquire the linguistic and cultural competence to communicate successfully in the target language, and obtain various learning strategies and skills. Classes will meet for four hours a day, five days a week, and students will be exposed to cultural aspects of the target country hrough various extra‐curricular activities, such as Yoga, Karam, Kabbadi, cricket, Indian classical music and dancing. Students will go on field trips a couple of times to various religious/cultural sites in Bloomington and its neighboring areas.

Students can choose to learn Hindi or Urdu, or both Hindi and Urdu. Our program will be equally represented by heritage and non‐heritage students. There will be diversity among the heritage students in the sense that students with different religious backgrounds, such as Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs will be placed together in the same class. Students are exposed to different cultures, which helps them learn the importance of culturally appropriate behaviors. This will ultimately contribute to mutual understanding among different racial and ethnic communities.

STARTALK‐SIPHUR 2009 is a residential program. Accepted students will receive a scholarship of $1,100 which will be used to pay for room and board. Bring yourself and your zeal for learning to the summer immersion program and have a rewarding and invaluable experience that you will remember for a lifetime.
