The Indiana Association of Historians

The Indiana Association of Historians is an organization open to anyone interested in the study, enjoyment, and promotion of history. The IAH brings together educators, scholars, genealogists, archivists, public historians, librarians, and the interested public in pursuit of history. The IAH was founded in 1980 and held its first annual meeting in 1981. The annual meeting, held the first weekend of March, brings together those interested in history from around the state and nation.

Membership revenues help the IAH sponsor the Thornbrough Lecture, hosted by Butler University, that honors Emma Lou and Gayle Thornbrough, both among the founders of the IAH. Beginning with the annual meeting in 2001, the IAH has acknowledged its longtime secretary with the Robert M. Taylor, Jr. Memorial Lecture. Membership revenues support the Indiana Council for History Education, an IAH committee that hosts a biennial conference on the teaching of history, grants an annual Governor's Award for Excellence in the Teaching of History, supports professional development activities for K-12 teachers, maintains a web site, and monitors relevant developments in statewide curricular and teacher licensing standards. Members also underwrite a variety of public advocacy projects of the IAH and support ongoing administrative expenses.
