Description
In this installment of the IDAH Brownbag series, Adrianne Wadewitz will examine questions of citizenship and justice in online communities through a case study of Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia that “anyone can edit.” While Wikipedia’s reliability and accuracy have been studied, what has not been examined is the world which operates “behind the scenes”—the vast community, the social norms and rules, and the political interactions of its editors. Indeed, as the site has grown we can trace the development of increasingly complex forms of citizenship—the creation of a “constitution”, justice system and social hierarchies—and a society as complex as any in the offline world. This presentation will explore two theories of online citizenship and to what extent Wikipedia is a just community. She hopes to suggest that people are no longer simply citizens of a single country: they are choosing to become citizens of other communities and thus the interactions between these offline and online citizenships must be taken into account in theories of citizenship.
