Academic Policy

Good Academic Standing
Students with both a semester and cumulative GPA of 3.00 or better remain in good academic standing with the program. Students must maintain this cumulative GPA and successfully complete program requirements, per semester, to avoid a reduction in award or dismissal from the financial portion of the program. Incoming freshmen are exempt from “standing” designation until the end of summer II, prior to sophomore year.

NOTE: All scholars, no matter the cohort, may utilize summer sessions to improve upon academic performance and affect cumulative GPA.

Enhanced
Scholars with a cumulative GPA of 3.70 or better will receive an additional award of $1000. Enhanced scholarship recipients can receive an enhancement of $2,000 for the academic year, if a 3.7 is carried into both fall and spring semesters. A student having an award deduction due to a lack of fulfillment of a program requirement will not qualify for a scholarship enchancement. Incoming freshmen cannot qualify for this increase until sophomore year.

Grade Watch
Students with a cumulative GPA of 3.20 or above, but a semester GPA below 3.0 will be given the status of grade watch. Individuals with a cumulative GPA between 3.0 and 3.199 will also be given the status grade watch.

NOTE: This is an early detection measure for potential trouble in meeting the required 3.00 cumulative GPA requirement. In both scenarios, scholars will receive full funding.

Probation
Returning students (sophomore – senior) who have a cumulative GPA below 3.0 and above the minimum cohort GPA requirement will receive a semester award reduction by fifty percent and will be required to meet their program counselor 1 additional time, during the semester of probation.
      • Award cut in half between 2.50 - 2.99 cumulative GPA (Cohort 19 and prior)
      • Award cut in half between 2.75 – 2.99 cumulative GPA (Cohort 20 and after)

Probationary status is for a maximum of three semesters for cohort 19 and prior and two semesters for cohort 20 and after. Program status will show probation 1, 2 or 3. Once a student has raised their cumulative GPA back to a 3.00 or above, their status will be changed to good academic standing and they will receive full funding.

Students not meeting the GPA requirement before probation exhaustion will be notified of dismissal from the financial portion of the program. Thereafter, a student with an academic year GPA of 3.50 or above may appeal their dismissal to the HHSP Director with the support of and through their program counselor.

Automatic Dismissal
First year freshmen with a cumulative GPA below a 2.75 at the end of the spring semester or returning students with a cumulative GPA below their required cohort GPA will be automatically dismissed from the financial portion of the program. All scholars may utilize summer sessions to improve upon academic performance and affect cumulative GPA to meet the minimum standard. Notice of accomplishment must be sent to hhsp@indiana.edu. Upon verification, the proper award will be reinstated.

Summer Courses
Probationary students who raise their cumulative GPA to a 3.0 or better, as a result of taking summer courses in the IU system, will have their status changed prior to the start of the ensuing semester and receive their full award. If a student’s GPA falls below a 3.0 after completing courses over the summer, their award will be reduced.

NOTE: It is the scholar’s responsibility to notify the Administrative Assistant for Scholarships and Financial Accounding at hhsp@indiana.edu of any changes in GPA.
