National Research Council (NRC)
Assessment of Research Doctorate Programs
in the United States
Indiana University, along with nearly every other major university in the United States, will be participating in the “Assessment of Research Doctorate Programs” being conducted by the National Research Council (NRC). This is the NRC’s third such broad-based undertaking, the first two having been conducted in 1983 and 1995. The results of the NRC’s assessments have been, and will continue to be, of considerable interest to university officers and faculty, higher education organizations and agencies, state education offices and planning boards, state governors and legislatures, prospective students, public and private sector employers, and the general public-at-large. Therefore, it is critical that Indiana University participates in this assessment in a comprehensive, thorough and conscientious manner.
The scope of this project includes a relatively broad, but select, number of doctoral granting programs that are defined in the NRC survey taxonomy (see links below). Data will be collected through four questionnaires (Institutional, Program, Faculty, and Student), which will include contributions from the program, the Graduate School and other campus units.
The University Graduate School in Bloomington and the Graduate Office in Indianapolis will be coordinating the data collection process for their respective campuses. An Advisory Board has been established and participating constituents will exchange information via an OnCourse worksite. This web page will be used to serve public information regarding the survey.
The NRC plans to release its Methodology Guide in December 2008. The survey results and on-line database are tentatively scheduled to be released in February 2009.
