Germanic Studies

Institute of German Studies

The Institute of German Studies, founded in 1969, facilitates and promotes interdisciplinary research and study of German literature and culture at Indiana University Bloomington. With its affiliated faculty from several departments, it is the place for the study and research of the German speaking world.

  • We annually host a Distinguished Max Kade Visiting Professor, appointed by the faculty of the Department of Germanic Studies. The list of recipients reach from Helmuth Lethen to Joseph Vogl, and Ethel Mattala de Mazza.
  • With the help of the Max Kade Foundation, we award a number of competitive fellowships for students pursuing an MA or a PhD in German Studies or in a related field.
  • We also award travel scholarships to high school students and undergraduate students participating in the overseas programs in Freiburg and Graz, as well as in the IU High School Honors Program in Graz, Austria.
  • We coordinate and sponsor events, lectures and conferences – among them the annual German Theater Project for High Schools.
