Higher Education Title VI
FLAS (Foreign Language and Area Studies) Fellowships
Application |
Each year the United States Department of Education (US/DE) awards Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships to universities in order to promote the graduate training of students who intend to make their careers in college or university teaching, government service, or other employment where knowledge of foreign cultures is a prerequisite for success.
Each fellowship is tenable for the academic year (for some programs, summer FLAS’s are also available) and carries an estimated fixed stipend of $15,000 (summer stipends are estimated at $2,500). The fellowship also exempts its recipient from paying academic fees. The total number of credits supported by the tuition payment of the FLAS fellowship will be determined by the graduate student’s academic department or program according to its definition of a full-time student. However, in all cases, the maximum number of hours supported will not exceed 12 hours per semester. Summer FLAS fellowships cover language credit hours only. U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible for FLAS fellowships. Holders of FLAS fellowships must undertake full-time study during the tenure of the award and be enrolled in formal language instruction (in the language of the award) and area or international studies courses.
Certain types of FLAS awards require approval of the U.S. Department of Education.
| PLEASE NOTE: The availability of FLAS awards in 2010/11 is contingent upon receipt of grant funding from the U.S. Department of Education. |
