FLAS (Foreign Language and Area Studies) Fellowships
Application

Each year the United States Department of Education awards Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships to universities in order to promote the training of students who intend to make their careers in college or university teaching, government service, or other employment where knowledge of foreign cultures is a prerequisite for success.

U.S. Citizen or Permanent Residency status required for eligibility.

ACADEMIC YEAR

  • UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT
    • $5,000 academic year stipend plus maximum tuition award of $10,000 or actual tuition if lower.
    • Requires enrollment in intermediate level language instruction (second-year level) or higher of a least commonly taught language (study of French, German or Spanish is NOT eligible for FLAS support for undergraduates).
  • ARTS & SCIENCES GRADUATE STUDENT
    • $15,000 academic year stipend plus maximum tuition award of 12 credit hours per semester.
    • Automatic enrollment in the graduate student health insurance plan with the cost of the student premium paid by the fellowship.
  • PROFESSIONAL SCHOOL GRADUATE STUDENT
    • $15,000 academic year stipend plus tuition award of at least $18,000, or actual tuition if lower.
    • Automatic enrollment in the graduate student health insurance plan with the cost of the student premium paid by the fellowship.

SUMMER

  • ALL STUDENTS ALL PROGRAMS
    • $2,500 summer stipend plus tuition award for cost of language course only.
    • For summer undergraduate, requires enrollment in intermediate level language instruction (second-year level) or higher of a least commonly taught language (study of French, German or Spanish is NOT eligible).
PLEASE NOTE:  The availability of FLAS awards in 2012/13 is contingent upon receipt of grant funding from the U.S. Department of Education.


Instructions to Applicants

Students are required to send the following materials to the appropriate world area contact indicated below:

  1. One copy of the application for Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships;

  2. One complete set of official transcripts of college and university credits;

  3. Three letters of recommendation (printable Flas Reference Form); and

  4. A completed Statement on Language Training and Proposed Program of Study.

The deadline for receipt of all materials concerning the application for FLAS Fellowships is February 1, 2012.  Send your application materials to the world area in which the language you propose to study is listed.  Please see below for a complete address.

Please remember that the selection of FLAS recipients is a competitive process.  That means you must have a complete packet, delivered within the deadline, with all documents submitted of the highest quality, in order to ensure your best chance of selection.

CENTER FOR LATIN AMERICAN AND CARIBBEAN STUDIES:

Haitian Creole, Portuguese, Quechua, Spanish, Yucatec Maya. Additional languages available for summer study. Graduate students are eligible to apply for all languages for both academic year and summer award periods. CLACS is not accepting applications from undergraduate students for the academic year award period. For the summer award period, undergraduate students are eligible to apply only for intermediate or advanced study of indigenous languages (2nd year or higher) or for advanced study of Portuguese (3rd year or higher).
