Outside guest speakers on campus:
September Philippe Moreau Defarges is a Senior Research Fellow at the French Institute of International Relations, specializing in European affairs and global governance. He is also co-director for IFri’s annual publication RAMSES. Professor Defarges has worked in several departments at the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and has held various positions such as Plenipotentiary Minister, Associate Professor at the Institut d’Etudes Politiques of Paris and Associate Professor at the University of Paris II Pantheon-Assas.
Roundtable participants will include Philippe Defarges (see biographical information above), Józef Niznik (see biographical information below), and Jim Rollo (see biographical information below), moderated by John McCormick (see biographical information below). Jim Rollo is Professor of European Economic Integration at the University of Sussex in the UK, co-director of the Sussex European Institute, and co-editor of the Journal of Common Market Studies. For many years he was a senior economic advisor to the Foreign and Commonewealth Office in London. He has been a visitor at many different institutions around the world, from the Australian National University to the College of Europe in Bruges. John McCormick is Professor of Political Science at IUPUI. He has been a visiting professor at the Universities of Exeter and Sussex in Britain, and at the College of Europe in Belgium. Currently, he is a Visiting Research Fellow at the Sussex European Institute, University of Sussex, UK. His latest book, The European Superpower (Palgrave MacMillan, 2007) argues that the European Union has become a superpower whose style, values and interests distinguish it from cold war-style superpowers, and whose rise has created a bipolar international system in which the EU and the United States compete for economic and political influence.
Jozef Niznik is Professor in the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences, where he is Head of the European Studies Unit and the Jean Monnet Professor in the Graduate School for Social Research. Since 2000, he has also been a professor in the Department of International Relations of the Collegium Civitas in Warsaw.
