Summer Professional Development Program for Middle and High School Teachers

With STARTALK funding, we held an intensive, two-and-a-half-week residential Chinese Pedagogy Institute (CPI) offering four to five hours of graduate-level credit to 24 prospective and current secondary school teachers (16 “beginning” and 8 “advanced” teachers).
Instructional materials, lodging, and meals were fully covered, as was the 4 to 5 credit hours of tuition.
Goals and Activities
The institute was designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of current and prospective middle and high school teachers of Chinese. The course of study, worth four to five graduate credits through IU’s School of Education, partially fulfills the requirements for secondary teacher certification in Chinese:
- EDUC L520: Advanced Study in Foreign Language Teaching (3 credit hours, for beginning track participants)
- EDUC L530: Topical Workshop in Language Education (3 credit hours, for advanced track participants)
- EDUC M501: Laboratory/Field Experience (2 credit hours for beginning track participants and 1 credit hour for advanced track participants)
Course content was guided by the standards for K-12 Chinese language teachers recently developed by the Chinese Language Association of Secondary-Elementary Schools (CLASS). Areas addressed included:
- effective methods and techniques of teaching Chinese;
- principles for selecting and developing instructional materials;
- process for curriculum design and instructional planning; and
- implementation of lesson plans and class management.
To achieve these goals, participants engaged in two and a half weeks of intensive study. The main activities included:
- discussion of theories and research on teaching Chinese as a foreign language;
- observation and critiques of Chinese classes on tape (beginning track);
- review and critiques of existing syllabi, stories/materials for young adults, learning tasks, and test items (advanced track);
- peer microteaching; and
- observation and application of instructional and classroom management skills to 12 middle school and 12 high school students.
The institute was funded by STARTALK, a presidential initiative to fund summer programs in critical needs languages.
