Funding Opportunities

For Graduate Students

We provide support for IU graduate students whose work focuses on China, Japan, or Korea through fellowships and travel grants.

IU’s Office of the Vice President for International Affairs and the Association for Asian Studies (AAS) also offer grant programs and exchange opportunities for graduate students. The Grad Grants Center, located on the 10th floor (room 1052E) of the Herman B Wells Library, also provides free, centralized information on fellowships, internships, and grants, as well as consultants to assist students with online grant database searches and writing grant proposals.

Additional fellowship information is posted outside our main office at Memorial Hall West 207 and at the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures in Goodbody Hall 255.

Fellowships

We offer two types of fellowships for graduate students:

Title VI Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships

Summer and Academic Year
Application deadline: February 1, 2009

These fellowships include:

  • Tuition fee remission
  • Academic-year stipend of $15,000 (estimated) and/or summer stipend of $2,500 (estimated)
  • Enrollment in graduate student health insurance program (academic-year recipients only)

These fellowships support graduate training of students who plan to pursue careers in college or university teaching, government service, or other fields in which knowledge of foreign languages and cultures is required. The availability of FLAS awards in academic year 2009-10 is contingent upon receipt of grant funding from the U.S. Department of Education.

Summer 2009 and 2009-10 academic-year FLAS Fellowships for the study of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean are potentially available through our center as well as the IU Center for the Study of Global Change. FLAS awards from the Center for the Study of Global Change will be awarded only to students whose academic program or career objectives are inter-regional or international in perspective. Applicants whose field of study or career goals have this global component should apply for fellowships through both centers.

Applicants must demonstrate academic excellence and a commitment to using the language as part of long-term academic or professional career goals.

To apply for both an academic-year FLAS fellowship and a summer FLAS fellowship, students must submit a separate application to each program.
