Placement and Proficiency Exams « EALC Language Programs

 

Important information for international students who wish to establish proficiency in their native language:

Beginning April 16, 2012, undergraduate students whose native language is not English and who graduated from high school in a non-English speaking country may fulfill the foreign language requirement by providing official high school transcripts or other documentation. It is no longer necessary for these students to take a proficiency test in their native language. Please download the "Application for Establishment of Foreign Language Proficiency for Non-Native Speakers of English" form from the College of Arts and Sciences website (http://college.indiana.edu/recorder/forms.shtml) and return the completed form and required documentation to the College Recorders Office.

Students whose native language is not English but who graduated from high school in the US or another English speaking country will still need to take a proficiency test to establish their proficiency in their native language. Students in this situation who need to take a test in Chinese, Japanese or Korean, please see the testing information below.

 

Chinese - Testing for placement and proficiency for all students

Chinese placement testing is regularly scheduled to take place in the week before classes each semester (late August and early January).

The next Chinese proficiency test will next be before classes begin in Fall 2012.

Notes for the Chinese Language Test:
Registration is not required
Bring a photo ID and a pencil to the test
You can call EALC (856-4959) the day after the test to get your results

If you have a proven urgent situation that prevents you from taking the test in August or January, you may contact Professor Julia Luo to see about the possibility of arranging an alternate test time.

Japanese - Testing for placement and proficiency

New undergraduate and transfer students needing Japanese testing will be tested during new and transfer student orientation. Please see your orientation advisor for details.

For all other students,the Japanese placement test will next be before classes begin in Fall 2012.

If you need to take the Japanese test prior to August 2012, please contact Professor Keiko Kuriyama to see about arranging an alternate test time.

Korean

 
Proficiency Testing:

If you are a native speaker of Korean who graduated from high school in the US or another English speaking country, please click here to fill out the online "PROFICENCY EXAM" registration form for the proficiency test. The test is given twice a year - once in fall semester and once in spring semester.

The next scheduled Korean Proficiency Test will be during fall semester 2012 and registration for this test is not currently open.

If you need to take the Korean Proficiency Test prior to fall 2012, please contact Professor Hyo Sang Lee.

Placement testing:

If you wish to take a Korean class at IU in an upcoming semester, the Korean placement test is now available online.

If you have studied Korean before and want to take a class in an upcoming semester, please click here to register online for the "PLACEMENT EXAM". You will be directed to the online test after you submit the online registration form.
