Vice President and Dean Wimbush encourages IU community to participate in MLK Jr. Day celebration

In his letter to IU colleagues, Vice President and Dean James Wimbush writes:

Many people think of Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a day off. But this time off from your normal work is a time of service and a time to remember the life and legacy of the Rev. Dr. King. Indiana University has a long history of activities and programs that focus our attention on Dr. King’s work and remind us of the charge he left for us.

One of these programs is Bloomington’s annual MLK Jr. Day celebration. The campus-wide programming celebrates the life of Dr. King and provides opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to rally together in commemoration of the ideals and aspirations of Dr. King. We want you be part of this programming and therefore ask you to consider hosting an event, or sponsor a movie night in honor of the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

It is so important that each of us contribute to the visibility of Dr. King’s birthday celebration and its activities because we share his vision of inclusiveness. The City of Bloomington is a key partner in the campus’ effort to celebrate Dr. King and will provide small grants for groups interested in hosting a service learning project. I have listed below some ideas on how you can be part of the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration:

  • Encourage students to participate in the various activities and events.
  • Host or co-sponsor a movie night with any student group on campus. Please see the movie night form attached.
  • Organize an event, meeting, or lecture that promotes a dialogue on issues or concerns affecting the living legacy of Dr. King.
  • Notify the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Multicultural Affairs of any events planned in January that you may be aware of and would like to see included in the printed and electronic MLK Jr. Day Celebration calendar by sending the following information by e-mail to Name/Title of Event, Date, Venue, Description: (2-3 lines), Contact Person, and e-mail address.

If you are interested in any of these or other ideas for the month, please contact Roberta Radovich at The deadline for submitting events for the MLK Jr. Day Celebration calendar is November 8, 2013.

Thank you in advance and we look forward to your continued support of MLK Jr. Day activities.
