Register by Oct. 25 for new Indiana University Diversity Leadership Conference

Friday, October 4, 2013

The new Indiana University Diversity Leadership Conference will be held in the Indiana Memorial Union on Friday, November 8, 2013. The conference is a student leadership event that provides a platform from which to address issues that impact various student communities. The conference exists to promote academic excellence, coalition building, diversity education, leadership development, and personal empowerment.

The 2013 Diversity Leadership Conference theme, "Building Social Capital: What Is Your Net Worth?" will explore how social capital connects individuals to just about everything. Connecting French sociologist Bourdieu's philosophy that "social networks have value," sessions will be offered to help students and participants unpack the types of social networks they have available to them and give meaningful insights on how better to connect responsibly to the world around them. The sessions will highlight traditional methods of building social capital (meet and greets, social exchange opportunities, passing out business cards, etc.) and explore more modern and technological forms of building social capital (Twitter, Linked In, Facebook, etc.). Moreover, the sessions will help students and guests navigate this often tricky network to find their own voice, brand, and vision for the future.

Goals of the conference are to:

  • Identify qualities and behaviors that lead towards academic and professional success
  • Construct meaning from ideas and concepts related to diversity and inclusion
  • Provide tools for an action plan to implement strategies or initiatives reflective of the conference theme
  • Provide an atmosphere for students to increase their social capital for personal and professional opportunities

This new event is a merger of the Hudson and Holland Scholars LEAD Conference and the Men and Women of Color Leadership Conference. The new conference will continue the tradition of providing quality keynote speakers and concurrent workshops presenters. This year's featured speakers are Sage Steele, ESPN Sports Center Co-Host; Rafael Sanchez, RTV News 6 Team; and Rue Mapp, Founder of Outdoor Afro.

The conference is free, but registration is required. Registration deadline is Friday, October 25, 2013.
