Two Hudson and Holland Scholars awarded City of Bloomington Bravo Award for service to the community
Friday, July 25, 2014
The City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department recognized IU Hudson and Holland scholars Stephanie Rosa and Jordan Crowe for their leadership in running the STEM Outreach Club at the "Banneker at the View" community program.
Rosa and Crowe worked closely with the afterschool program to create a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) club, submitting lesson plans each week and developing classroom management skills during the first semester. By the second semester, they had a solid group of energetic volunteers and quality activities that the 3rd through 6th graders enjoyed.
STEM programming suited them well considering that Rosa is a Biochemistry major and Crowe is majoring in Biology. They will be seniors this fall and are on track to graduate in May 2015. They plan to use the next year to pass the STEM outreach program on to the next group of volunteers. Their hope is to create a sustainable student organization that will continue building excitement in traditionally underrepresented groups in the STEM career fields for years to come.
In appreciation of the commitment to the Banneker Community Center shown by Rosa, Crowe, and all of the Hudson and Holland STEM Outreach Club members, the Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department was pleased to recognize Stephanie Rosa and Jordan Crowe as its May 2014 BRAVO Award recipients.
The BRAVO Award recognizes the outstanding contributions of volunteers who generously give their time and energy to support Bloomington Parks and Recreation programs and activities benefiting the Bloomington community.
