Nov. 12, 14, and 15 meetings to conceptualize new campus-wide diversity program The IU Office of First Year Experience Programs and various campus partners plan to offer a new diversity program in Spring 2013. Help is sought in the conceptualization of the program and possibly in the implementing or marketing components of this program. The new program is modeled after the "Borrowed Shoes" program at Western University in Canada. At its core, this particular program presents a series of workshops, events, and challenges focused upon issues of social justice. Students are encouraged to attend workshops, events, lectures, contests, etc. and also to take part in individual exercises which expose them to experiencing things outside their comfort area. Students then blog, post YouTube video, or share information by way of Facebook and other types of social media about their experiences. Reflection and sharing by way of social media is an important part of the program. Discussions about the diversity program with the Commission on Multicultural Understanding, Diversity Education in RPS, and the Associate Dean for Student Affairs have provided great insight, suggestions, and support to the Office of First Year Experience program directors in this venture. In order to move forward in determining the best program for IU, interested persons are invited to attend one of the three conceptualizing meetings scheduled to garner input and ideas crucial to developing a meaningful and successful program. The meetings will be held:
If interested in contributing to the conceptualization of the new diversity program, please let Jack Rhodes, director of Office of First Year Experience Programs, know which session you will be attending. Contact him at jcrhodes@indiana.edu or (812) 855-4357.
