Outstanding Junior Faculty Awards

Deadline: Tuesday, October 14, 2008

The Outstanding Junior Faculty Awards are sponsored by the Office of Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculties as well as the Office of the Vice Provost for Research.  The awards are designed to assist untenured, tenure-track faculty to enhance their research programs prior to tenure.  Awards will be given to junior faculty members who show promise of achieving great distinction as scholars or artists.

The Outstanding Junior Faculty Awards were established to recognize the achievements of junior faculty who have devoted considerable time to the teaching and service missions of the University as well as developing a nationally recognized research program.

This program, which was endorsed by faculty at all ranks, supports five faculty each year to further their scholarship or creative activity.  Monetary support is provided through the combination of three different grants totaling approximately $14,500:

1.      a Summer Faculty Fellowship of up to $8,000;

2.      a Faculty Grant-in-Aid of Research in the amount of $2,500 for the academic year;

3.      a $4,000 grant-in-aid or released-time award (with departmental approval).

There are many demands on a junior faculty member’s time and energy, including teaching, becoming familiar with university procedures, and serving on a variety of department, school, and university committees.  The Outstanding Junior Faculty Awards provide support so that special attention can be given to a research project that has significant potential benefit.

All untenured, tenure-track Bloomington faculty, particularly those in their third, fourth, and fifth years of the tenure track, are urged to apply, and self-nominations are welcome.

Candidates should have been at Indiana University for at least one academic year and  demonstrate commitment to all three areas of teaching, research, and service, and show evidence of this in the materials submitted.  The most popular time for candidates to be nominated seems to be in the second, third, or fourth years of progress toward tenure.  Please limit your description of the proposed research/creative activity to no more than four single-spaced pages and use language accessible to colleagues from a wide array of disciplines.

Unsuccessful candidates from previous years are invited to re-submit.  Re-submitted nominations must include new, updated materials relevant to the past year(s).

Application:

Applications should provide evidence of the faculty members’ scholarly contributions and should emphasize potential future contributions.  The following items should be included:

            1.         A one-page abstract of and four [4] page (maximum) proposed research program, including a proposal that will be completed within the term of the award;

            2.         A current curriculum vitae or career résumé, including a list of honors or awards received for research or creative activities, teaching, and service;

            3.         Reviews of work (where relevant);

            4.         A statement by nominator(s) (except in the case of self-nomination) summarizing the candidate’s achievements in research, teaching, and service up to the present and the potential future contributions of the candidate;

            5.         A letter of support from the candidate’s department chair or school dean;

            6.         Three letters of recommendation: one letter from an internal scholar and two letters from external scholars who are familiar with the candidate’s work;

            7.         A one- to two-paragraph description of the research project for press releases.

Award recipients are expected to provide a brief report of their activities at the completion of the term of the award.

            Note: Please send two sets of your papers—one set which will be all the original letters/papers and the other set to be photostatic copies of the first set.

            We must have these two (2) complete sets.  Please send these materials by Tuesday, October 14, 2008  to:
