Publications
Graduate student Aleskandra Snowden and Professor Pridemore co-authored an article, entitled "Reduction in suicide mortality following a new national alcohol policy in Slovenia: An interrupted time-series analysis," that was just published in the May 2009 issue of American Journal of Public Health.
Three of our students have published articles in a recent special issue of the Journal of Contemporary Criminal Justice devoted to crime and justice in India. Graduate students Julia Scott and Douglas Evans co-authored an article with Professor Verma entitled "Does Higher Education Affect Perceptions Amongst Police Personnel? A Response from India," and T. K. Vinod Kumar published an article entitled “Public order in India: An empirical study.”
Graduate student Aleksandra Snowden and Professor Pridemore have co-authored an article, “The 2003 Slovenian alcohol policy: Background, supporters, and opponents,” that was recently published in Contemporary Drug Problems.
Graduate student Krista Eckhardt and Professor Pridemore have co-authored an article, "Differences in female and male involvement in lethal violence in Russia," that was recently published in Journal of Criminal Justice.
Graduate student Krista Eckhardt and Professor Pridemore recently co-authored an article, "A comparison of victim, offender, and event characteristics of alcohol- and non-alcohol-related homicides," that was published this summer in Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency.
Graduate student Adam Trahan and Professor Pridemore (and Dr. Mitchell Chamlin of the University of Cincinnati) recently co-authored an article, "A test of competing hypotheses about homicide following terrorist attacks: An interrupted time series analysis of September 11 and Oklahoma City" that was published this summer in Journal of Quantitative Criminology.
Graduate student TK Vinod Kumar and Professor Verma recently co-authored an article, “Hegemony, discipline and control in the administration of police in colonial India,” that was published in Asian Journal of Criminology.

Ph.D. student Maria Kaylen has won an award from the Mapping and Analysis for Public Safety program of the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) to fund her travel to the annual NIJ Crime Mapping Research Conference this summer, where she will present her paper “Enhancing our understanding of the spatial distribution of violent crime with data envelopment analysis and Geographic Information Systems.” Congratulations, Maria!
Our congratulations to PhD student Christopher Magno, who has won a prestigious Dissertation Year Research Fellowship for 2009-2010 from the College of Arts and Sciences to carry out his research on crime and corruption among political elites in the Philippines.

Graduate student Krista Eckhardt has won a Grant-in-Aid of Doctoral Research from IU’s University Graduate School to support her dissertation research. Her dissertation is entitled “The construction of victims and offenders in the courtroom discourse and media coverage of hate crime trials.”
Graduate student Cindy McNair recently created a new online course and is the Instructor for P100: Introduction to Criminal Justice, for the School of Continuing Studies. This course was recently one of three chosen for the IU/Purdue Rural Schools Initiative.
Ph.D. student Scott Ingram will be presenting a paper, entitled “The 1876 St. Louis whiskey ring trials and the origin of white collar crime prosecution,” in October at the Social Science History Association meetings in Miami. He won SSHA’s Rockefeller travel award to attend the conference. Nice work, Scott!
