| Teaching
Statement As an instructor I believe my role is to facilitate student learning through creative language use and to spur student interest and enthusiasm for the Chinese language. I hope to teach students to become able communicators in a variety of social settings within the Chinese speaking world, have a greater awareness of Chinese culture and their own cultural backgrounds, and develop insight into the roles which language, culture, and communication play within their own lives and the lives of others. Language learning should focus on the traditional aspects of tonal practice and character drill but also emphasize creative language use with others, in pairs and groups, in a number of different scenarios and settings. Classroom language use will therefore require the students to demonstrate linguistic competencies such as variation of register and use of circumlocution and rephrasing. Reading texts will focus on global skills needed for understanding, such as genre identification, and not simply skills for Chinese character recognition. The goal will be for the students to read for meaning and to use language to mediate and interact in social situations. Within the classroom I will incorporate a variety of instructional materials in different media to meet the needs of the students as they become participants in communities of Chinese speakers. Students will be exposed to different types of language use through authentic radio or television broadcast segments as well as print media in different genres, from Tang dynasty poetry to storefront signs. However, literacy in Chinese now also involves familiarity with digital media. Therefore, my classroom will incorporate websites, podcasts, and streamed media so students can view authentic programs while also becoming acquainted with a new form of language community. |
