Statement Having just concluded my first year of teaching Chinese, I have learned a lot about pacing, motivating students, and multiple learning styles. I also received excellent training at Cleveland State University in current practices and applying the ACTFL standards. I believe we should concentrate on teaching students listening and speaking first with lots of practice but not a lot of grammar explanation. Reading should also be practiced but with much less emphasis. Writing characters is introduced and practiced in one lesson each week but without the expectation that students will be able to produce many characters from memory at this stage. Reading and writing will be emphasized in 3rd and 4th year Chinese. I want students’ interest in Chinese to grow and for them to have a good grounding in sentence patterns and vocabulary to prepare them for further study in university or use in their chosen careers. I also want them to understand the thinking and traditions behind the language and so spend one day a week on culture. |
