COMU History

COMU traces its roots to 1982, when the IU Dean of students formed the Committee on Racial Understanding. In 1985, recognizing the value of involvement in campus-wide initiatives, the name was changed to the Commission on Racial Understanding (CORU). The next name change to the Commission on Multicultural Understanding (COMU) occurred in 1990 to reflect the group's work on broader issues related to mutual respect and sensitivity among people from different racial groups and cultural backgrounds.
