COMU CommitteesFACULTY & STAFF POLICY ISSUES examines policies and practices of any university units that affect recruitment, retention, and satisfaction of diverse faculty, staff, associate instructors, or graduate assistants. Based on this research, the committee recommends changes in policies and practices or new programs that could correct problems. ORIENTATION & WELCOME assists the Office of Orientation Programs in designing a student orientation session that addresses the topics of racism and diversity. The group co-sponsors the annual fall WelcomeFest with the Indiana Memorial Union (IMU) Union Board. It designs ways to inform students of procedures for reporting incidents of racism and harassment encountered on campus, and of university services that can assist students when such incidents occur. RETREATS & RECOGNITION coordinates gatherings of students, staff, and faculty to discuss issues concerning multiculturalism, the campus and community environment, and other concerns related to the mission of COMU. It coordinates and hosts the annual COMU Awards & Recognition Reception held each spring. STUDENT COALITION combats racism and other forms of oppression on campus and in the surrounding community. This is accomplished through awareness-raising and other educational activities designed for students. STUDENT POLICY ISSUES examines policies and practices of the university's academic departments, administrative offices, and student organizations that affect recruitment, retention, and satisfaction of diverse students. Based on this work, it recommends changes in policies and practices or new programs that could correct problems. In Spring 2000, the Student Policy Issues Committee published the brochure "Planning a Culturally Sensitive Event: Guidelines and Resources for Student Organizations". TEACHABLE MOMENTS responds to campus needs for education and dialogue on multicultural issues of immediate concern. Programs are intended to increase understanding of campus conflict. TRAINING recruits and trains interested students, staff, and faculty to serve as campus multicultural awareness facilitators. The committee designs awareness programs for presentation by facilitators and develops procedures for promoting available programs.
