ACTIONS
- Approved minutes of November 12, 2002 meeting.
- Approved with changes the draft proposal regarding Mathematics and Formal Reasoning (proposal to be discussed further in Spring 2003 CUE meetings).
- Asked a sub-committee (Allan Edmonds, Michael Gasser, Daniel O'Neill, Olivia Snyder) to report before the next meeting on appropriate courses to be listed on the math proposal.
DISCUSSION
The Committee continued discussion of mathematics requirements, looking at a summary of CUE discussions so far. The summary proposal details a "Mathematics and Formal Reasoning" requirement for B.A. degree. In response to questions in the proposal, the committee decided that a course would need to be on record to complete the Formal Reasoning part of the proposal, but that this course could be the result of special credit. The Committee also formed a sub-committee to review specific courses that could be used to satisfy the Formal Reasoning section of the proposal. This issue will be discussed further in spring 2003.
The Committee heard a summary of proposed departmental changes in the following areas: African-American and African Diaspora Studies (new name for what was formerly called Afro-American Studies), Astronomy, Chemistry, Spanish. None of the changes required further review by CUE.
Committee members were pleased to hear that two proposals that have been approved by CUE at earlier meetings have now received final HEC approval: B.S. in Statistics, B.A. program in International Studies.
The next meeting is scheduled for early in the spring semester 2003 (time to be announced) in KH 007.
