Announcing the CLACS Spring 2017 Photo Contest
3/9/17 - CLACS is proud to announce that we will once again be holding the CLACS Photo Contest! We are soliciting applications from all IU Faculty, Staff, and Students. The only requirement is that the photographs are your own personal work and were taken in either Latin America or the Caribbean. For more information about applying, please see the contest's webpage.

Affiliated Faculty receives medal for work with Zapotec peoples in Mexico
6/3/16 - Chancellor's Professor of Anthropology, Anya Peterson Royce received the Medalla Guendabinniza (Medal, Spirit of the Zapotec People), 2015-2016, for distinguished scholarly contributions to the Zapotec people. She is the first non-Mexican recipient of the award.

IU Alumna wins 2016 Américas Award for Children's Young Adult Literature
5/30/16 - Ashley Hope-Pérez, a 2014 IU graduate with a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature and a specialization in Latin American and Latina/o literature won the CLASP 2016 Américas Award for Children's and Young Adult Literature for her book Out of Darkness. The award links the Americas by reaching beyond geographic borders and multicultural-international boundaries, focusing upon cultural heritages within the hemisphere. Up to two annual book awards are given in recognition of U.S. published works that authentically and engagingly portray Latin America, the Caribbean, or Latinos in the United States. Ashley Hope-Pérez is Assistant Professor in the Department of Comparative Studies at The Ohio State University. More >>.

IU East professor to teach online course on Latin America
5/16/16 - Dr. Wazir Mohamed, Assistant Professor of Sociology at IU East will be teaching a summer online course on Cultures of Latin America. See his flyer for more information.

Fall 2016 Themester course by affiliated faculty member on sensual knowledge
4/21/16 - Chancellor's Professor of Anthropology, Anya Peterson Royce will be teaching Sensual Knowledge: Aesthetics of Body, Word, Image, Sound as part of the 2016 College of Arts & Sciences Themester on Beauty. The course will include guest artists and scholars including Richard Scofano and Alfredo Minetti in October and Soid Pastrana in November.

CLACS Libarian creates new World Book and Copyright Day Exhibition in Wells Library
4/6/16 - During the month of April, a new poster exhibition celebrating World Book and Copyright Day (April 23) will be on display in the lobby of the Herman B Wells Library. April 23 marks the date when three of the world's most celebrated literary figures - Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra (Spain), William Shakespeare (England), and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega (Peru) - all died. CLACS now accepting applications for the Summer 2016 Field Research Grants
12/4/16 - CLACS will offer Graduate Student Field Research Grants for Summer 2016, made possible with generous support from the IU College of Arts and Sciences, School of Global and International Studies, School of Public and Environmental Affairs, and School of Education. Grants are intended to support pilot research projects in all countries of Latin America and the Caribbean (excluding Puerto Rico) by graduate students in the early phases of their careers. IU students from all schools, disciplines, and graduate degree programs are welcome to apply. Grants may not, however, be used in support of advanced dissertation research. Applications are now being accepted and are due February 5, 2016 by 5pm EST. More >>

11/17/15 - Manuel Díaz-Campos, Professor of Sociolinguistics in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, received $18,000 from the Collaborative Research and Creative Activity Funding Program for his project, "The contributions of perception and production studies to the understanding of sociolinguistic attitudes: An analysis of the phonology of Puerto Rican Spanish." CLACS is the institutional collaborator for the project.
