Within CITL's wide range of services, several programs provide distinct support for specific areas of teaching and learning.
The SOTL Program provides support for IUB instructors who want to take a scholarly, inquiry-based approach to their teaching. It offers consultations about all aspects of educational research, provides a variety of grants to support those research projects, promotes the sharing of SOTL findings both within and beyond IUB, and works to foster a thriving community of individuals engaged in SOTL studies.
The Service-Learning Program advances engaged learning at IUB by promoting the use of community service as a means of enhancing students' educational experiences. The program creates opportunities for Indiana University students, faculty, and staff to learn in partnership with the community and to develop competencies that promote the advancement of a socially responsible citizenry.
The Campus Writing Program is dedicated to improving undergraduate education by promoting writing as a way of learning and teaching. It provides assistance to instructors in developing effective writing assignments and grading practices, and it supports student achievement through Writing Tutorial Services, IUB's writing center.
IUB offers many resources specifically to support graduate student teaching. These resources include an online teaching handbook, pedagogy courses, workshops and consultations about teaching, participation in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning conversations, Preparing Future Faculty opportunities, and teaching awards.
Every summer, the Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning and Instructional Consulting at the Kelley School of Business co-sponsor the Course Development Institute (CDI). By way of highly interactive processes and activities, Institute facilitators guide participants through the beginning phases of developing a new course or transforming an existing course. Participants receive invaluable feedback from colleagues from other departments and disciplines on the work they do during the Institute.
Faculty Learning Communities (FLC) at Indiana University Bloomington are cohorts of faculty members, often from different disciplines or fields of study, who ask questions about teaching and learning, try out teaching innovations, assess student learning, create new models of practice, and publish scholarship about their work. Each FLC shares a question, a set of problems, or a passion about a topic, as members deepen their knowledge and expertise in this area by interacting on an ongoing basis.
The CITL sponsors a number of grants and awards to support IUB faculty members in developing innovative approaches to teaching and learning.
The Institute for Designing Online Courses (iDOC) is a summer institute offered by the CITL to guide Indiana University Bloomington instructors through the process of designing an online course.
CITL provides support for departments and programs across the University that are undergoing program review, or that want to develop programmatic goals for their students’ learning and assess how well students are reaching those goals. CITL consultants can help departments develop a plan to conduct a program review, and can also offer workshops and support to guide departmental faculty as they carry out the plan.
