Advanced Estonian II
Catalog Number CEUS-U 542
Piibi-Kai Kivik

The advanced course serves to further consolidate the students’ knowledge of the structure of Estonian and build vocabulary, especially in the areas of the students' interest/specialization. While all four language acquisition skills, speaking, reading, listening and writing, are further developed in this course, compared to the earlier years of Estonian language instruction at IU, the advanced course places a stronger emphasis on reading and writing.

Three hours of class per week means intensive independent work out of class and a strong incentive for the students to contribute to both the overall structure of the class and the individual meetings. At this level, the course will be tailored to the needs of the students as much as possible. The students participate in selecting the texts for reading, and much of the explicit instruction of structures and usage is based on the students’ individual difficulties in particular areas of the language.

Assignments:  The assignments in this class include reading for general comprehension, close reading for translation, listening for general comprehension, listening for details, writing of summaries, reviews, letters, essays, class discussions and oral presentations. Translation and structured grammar exercises will be assigned to practice particular structures.

Home-reading:  The students will read on their own, with the help of a dictionary

  1. Estonian fiction – short stories, excerpts from novels, etc., as assigned by the instructor (the students may make suggestions). The readings will be discussed at the instructor’s office hour, at least once a month or every other week, and reported on as part of the Midterm and Final exams.
  2. One news-article every week: students select an online piece of news, read independently, write a short summary and orally summarize the reading every Monday.

Requirements:  Attendance and active participation is absolutely necessary in this class, and so is independent work. There will be regular quizzes (every other week or after completion of a topic), a midterm and a final exam. The exams will consist of both in-class oral and written parts and will include a take-home component (an essay and/or translation).
