Intermediate Turkish II

In this course we will use some books of Hitit- Yabancılar İçin Türkçe by Ankara Üniversitesi TÖMER Publication. The course will further develop and expand the communicative skills, grammar and vocabulary you acquired during last year. All basic language skills, listening, speaking, reading and writing will be included in class activities and in homework. Special attention will be paid to build up a richer vocabulary, to develop a good competence of vernacular language, and to improve your reading skills. Since culture is integrated with language, various cultural expressions such as recordings, media-film, handcrafts, and cartoons will also be used in a variety of contexts.

A “fat” enough bilingual dictionary:  My recommendation is Redhouse Büyük El Sözlüğü (The Larger Redhouse Portable Dictionary), Redhouse Yayınevi, Istanbul 1999    

A reference book (recommended): Turkish Grammar by Robert Underhill   

Quizzes, Tests:

You will have four quizzes (5-10 minutes) during the semester. They may include dictation, vocabulary and grammar points covered throughout the weeks. They will be announced one week in advance in the class.  

Six tests will be given at the end of each six units and will cover all of the material presented in those lessons. The first test aims at measuring your knowledge of first year Turkish. I will give you a study guide for the first test. See the calendar for the exam dates. 

A comprehensive final exam will cover all of the material covered throughout the entire course.    

Oral Exam:

You will also be graded on your speaking and comprehension skills individually. For this, you will set up an appointment with me in the last week of classes (15th week of the semester). Detailed information on the format of the test will be provided later.  


You will write 5 compositions with 150-200 words in length throughout the semester. The topics for the compositions will be picked up from the textbook and you will have a number of options to choose. If you like, you may turn in your first draft before due dates and ask me to mark the mistakes. Your grade for each composition will be based on your  “corrected” final draft. Compositional assignment will constitute take-home part of your tests. Therefore, it is not shown in the percentages below. Please pay particular attention to organization of your writing as much as its contents and grammar.

Bonus for hard workers: You can receive 5% for extra activities to improve your grade. The nature and value of these activities must be discussed with the instructor in advance.
