Ottoman Literature in the 17th-18th Centuries

This advanced seminar on Ottoman Literature will predominantly focus on the 17-18 century poets. In addition to analysis of poems by some of the most representative poets of the time, such as Nef’î, Nedîm, Sünbülzade Vehbî, Fâzıl-ı Enderunî, and Şeyh Gâlib, students will be introduced to some prose texts, as well. The secondary academic objectives of the seminar will be 1) to provide students with exposure to some of the fundamental sources of Ottoman literary studies; 2) to cover the classical and the contemporary theoretical debates on Ottoman court literature in particular, and on court literature in general; and 3) to study the major verse and prose forms of Ottoman literature.
