European Folk Musics
CEUS-R 349
Lynn Hooker

Class meets first eight weeks only

This course will examine a wide variety of European musical communities, nations, and styles, from Hungary, Finland, Bulgaria, and Russia in the east to Norway, England, and Ireland in the west, as    well     as   some    musics    of two important transnational communities, Jews and Roma (Gypsies).  In addition, we will explore issues of style, ethnicity, nationalism, revival, politics, and commercialization expressed through this music.

The course has three goals: to become familiar with the diversity of European national and regional musics and some ways of studying them, to examine the roles these musics play in the lives of the people who make them, and to understand the interplay between innovation and preservation that has changed them over time. No musical background is necessary.
