Activity: Postal Rates Financial Policy: N/A Related Policies: N/A Additional Forms: N/A Things to Know: United States Postal Service Rates: Budget Information 2009-10 On May 11, 2009 the United States Post Office will adjust prices for First Class Mail, Standard Mail, Periodicals, Package Services, and Special Services. The average increase per class of mail can not exceed the rate of inflation as measured by the Consumer Price Index.
Shape-based pricing, is still in effect—which means the shape and format of your mail piece will have a significant impact on your cost. This structure recognizes that each of the designated shapes has substantially different processing costs and prices will be adjusted accordingly. The result will be an increased need to package outgoing mail properly at the initial stages of mail preparation. For example: if the contents of a 2 ounce flat can be folded and placed into a letter size envelope you can save 44 cents. Or, if a 2 ounce parcel can be packaged in a flat it will save 34 cents. Please contact Mail Service and we will assist in designing your mail piece to help control your postage expense. The United States Postal Service is also implementing a number of new standards which can affect cost. Please remain in compliance with new addressing standards for flat and first class mail along with Move Update requirements. This will allow departments to mail at the cheapest rates possible and keep the mail piece in the automated mail stream for faster delivery.
