The Developmental Neuroimaging Project

Research in CAN Lab focuses on how our actions affect cognition. Our interactions with our world are reliant on actions and therefore perception and cognition are determined by action. We study how our history of actions with the environment, such as how we handle objects or learn words for objects and actions, affect our ideas or representations of those objects and words. The research in CAN Lab uses functional magnetic resonance imaging as a tool for investigating neural processing during learning in preschool and elementary aged children, adolescents and adults. However, we are also interested in learning in toddlers, and study the effects of action on object knowledge, categorization and word learning during this amazing period of cognitive growth. The CAN Lab is directed by Dr. Karin Harman James and managed by Shelley Swain. Please utilize the navigation bar at the left side of each page to learn more about our research.

The research conducted in the CAN Lab would not be possible without the help of willing parents and children. We strive to make the parent/child experience fun and enjoyable.
