Hoosier Guitar Idol

What: Hoosier Guitar Idol - Battle of Bloomington's 10 Best Guitarists

When: January 22, 2009 @ 6:30 PM

Where: Max's Place - 109 West 7th Street


Winner: Parker Weidner

Runner-Up: Shane Provost


Format:

Round 1

  • Each contestant will play a 3-4 minute solo performance
  • Top four (4) scores will advance
  • Round 2

  • Contestants will be placed in 2 groups to duel each other on stage, backed by the house band*
  • Judges will pair each together based on similar styles
  • Top two (2) scores will advance
  • Round 3

  • Finalists will compete in a battle for first place backed by the house band*
  • Winner will receive $250 cash
  • Runner-up will receive $50 cash
  • *House band will be comprised of drummer and a talented BCEC member who plays keyboard, named Smiley, who will play a split bass/keys on his keyboard.

    6:40-6:50 - Tyler Baker (Performer 1)

    6:50-7:00 - Shane Provost (Performer 2)

    7:05-7:15 - Patrick Vollme (Performer 3)

    7:15-7:25 - Drew Doepke (Performer 4)

    7:25-7:35 - Gabrielle Gutierrez (Performer 5)

    7:35-7:45 - Michael Lantow (Performer 6)

    7:45-8:00 - Adam Cantor (Performer 7)

    8:00-8:10 - Parker Weidner (Performer 8)

    8:10-8:20 - Matt Dirksen (Performer 9)

    8:20-8:30 - John Spiekerman (Performer 10)

    Judges:

    1. Jason Wilber - Bloomington's own singer/songwriter and lead guitarist from Grammy Award-Winning artist John Prine. Visit www.jasonwilber.com for more info.
    2. Dan Sumner - Co-Founder and guitarist for PermaGrin based in New Orleans. Sumner also works as an assistant instructor at the IU Jacobs School of Music while pursuing a Ph.D. He plays locally in the Dan Sumner Trio. Visit www.permagrin.us for more info.
    3. Kyle Gilpin - Lead Guitarist of The Buzzkills. The winner of the inaugural Hoosier Guitar Idol. Visit www.thebuzzkills.com for more info.
    4. The audience will serve as a judge for Round 1. Each person that pays a cover charge will receive one ballot to cast a vote for the guitarist they think should be named IU's Hoosier Guitar Idol 2009. Additional ballots can be purchased. The contestant which receives the most audience votes will receive 10 points, second place 9 points, and so on. The audience judging element will only be in effect for Round 1!

    Judging Criteria:

  • Style: 25 points
  • Knowledge of Music: 25 points
  • Originality: 25 points
  • Performance: 25 points
  • Audience Votes: 10 points
  • Prizes:

  • First Place: $250
  • Second Place: $50
  • Third - Tenth Place: The thrill of a lifetime!
