Application Information | Graduate Studies
- The Graduate Program in the History of Art enrolls roughly 15 new graduate students each year, selected from the applicant pool based on their academic merit and fit with the current strengths of the graduate program.
- Applicants should, ideally, have completed an undergraduate major in art history, or at the least, substantial undergraduate coursework. Applicants to the Master’s Degree with an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.5 and a GRE Verbal score of at least 600 will be given preference. However, the graduate admissions committee evaluates all components of an application package before arriving at a decision on admission.
- Recommendation letters should come from university faculty (preferably art historians) or museum or gallery professionals who have directly observed the work of the applicant.
- A Ph.D applicant’s statement of purpose should address specifically the proposed field of study and the faculty member with whom the applicant wishes to work.

GRE Scores
The Graduate School suggests a minimum verbal score of 600. The GRE scores will be
evaluated by the Department of the History of Art in conjunction with the rest of the application materials.
TOEFL Requirements:
Minimum Paper based TOEFL (PBT) Scores: Overall score: 550
Minimum Computer-based TOEFL Scores:: Overall score: 213
Minimum Internet-based TOEFL Scores:: Overall score: 79-80
