PhD minor in Native American & Indigenous Studies: Graduates

Students who pursue the PhD minor in Native American & Indigenous Studies will focus their interdisciplinary study on the histories, cultures, and literatures of Native American and Indigenous peoples, chiefly in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, but also, where appropriate, in the broader Americas. This is one of a very few programs in the United States that focus explicitly on Native American and Indigenous Studies at the graduate level, and that place the study of American Indians within the context of a broader, more sweeping and international inquiry into the nature of political power, colonial settlement, and global contact.

Requirements

Requirements for the Native American and Indigenous Studies PhD minor encourage graduate students to develop a program of academic inquiry that complements their doctoral program and takes advantage of the wide range of College of Arts and Sciences faculty with a focus on Native American and Indigenous literature, politics, art, history, culture, and folklore. Each student’s "Program of Study" is developed upon their entry to the degree and in consultation with the American Studies Director.

• 12 credit hours of coursework
• G605 Introduction to Native American & Indigenous Studies (4 cr. hrs.)
• The remaining credits can come from any other American Studies course offered by faculty outside their home department, including:
  1. G620 Colloquium in American Studies (3-4 cr. hrs.) with relevant Native or Indigenous content
  2. G751 Seminar in American Studies (3-4 cr. hrs.) with relevant Native or Indigenous content, or
  3. G753 Independent Study in American Studies (1-4 cr. hrs.) also with relevant Native or Indigenous content. P: Consent of the director of American Studies and of instructor, who must be a member of the American Studies faculty. (Please complete the AMST-G753 Proposal and obtain appropriate signatures. This proposal must be on file with American Studies before permission to enroll is granted.)

Admission and Program of Study

Students are required to submit a "Program of Study" to an affiliated American Studies faculty member for final approval. After approval, a signed copy should be sent to the Director. The Program of Study will provide the rationale for the student’s proposed curriculum and will list the courses, with alternative selections in the event such courses are not offered on a timely basis that will serve as the student’s minor program. With the Director’s approval, the student will become officially enrolled in the Native American & Indigenous Studies degree.
