Sofia Palatnikova was born in 1927 in Teplyk. She is the sister of Tatiana Marinina. She went to a Ukrainain school for six years, but her schooling was interrupted by the war. She was brought up mostly in the Lunacharskii collective farm in the Crimea, but returned with her family to Teplyk in 1940. She survived the war in Teplyk and Bershad, and in camps in Bratlsav, Haysyn and Raygorod.
