Alexei (Iler)  Romanovich Futiran was born in 1925 in Tomashpol'. His father Rivn was a coachman (balegole) and his mother Udl raised six children (five boys and one girl). She was an orphan. Alexei is named after his paternal grandfather Elye. Futiran has been married twice, the second time to a non-Jewish woman. His two sons live in Israel. Futiran has worked his whole life as a hatmaker. As a child, he attended both Yiddish and Ukrainian-language schools.
