Director's Welcome

Samuel Obeng Welcome to the African Studies Program! Our vision centers on training a new generation of Africanist scholars. We provide students with an opportunity to interact with each other across disciplines, and with our world-renowned faculty within the College and across six professional schools in the university. We encourage creativity, team work, and practical and sensible ways of solving academic and real world problems.

We realize our mission through excellence in scholarship (teaching and research), as well as through leadership and citizenship via the performance of outreach activities. Our instructional activities strive at excellence in students’ chosen fields and provide them with the breadth of vision that motivates them to navigate in a changing globalized and international world.

Our Program is grounded in the humanities and social sciences, which we believe is an excellent way to train university students. Our extensive languages program as well as graduate free-standing and dual masters degree programs are quite intense and yet extremely stimulating and exciting. I encourage you to browse our web pages, make a call to our friendly office staff and faculty or even visit our beautiful campus, to have coffee and speak with us, perhaps even sit in on one of our classes to get a taste of Africa in a unique American university. Come join with us to study about this wonderful continent, its peoples, its unique cultures, its wealth and commerce, its interesting but complex political and juridical systems and its challenges. Nyansa nni ɔbaako ti mu ‘No one has monopoly over wisdom’ [Akan proverb] so come share your unique experiences with us and learn from ours.
