A number of the academic halls on campus are important to
the history of the Bloomington campus and are recognized today as
important academic buildings on campus.
Maxwell Hall (pictured at left) and Wylie Hall are
located in the Old Crescent area of campus. Wylie Hall was built in 1884,
and Maxwell Hall followed in 1890. Maxwell Hall housed the library until
1907 when the book room exceeded its capacity of 60,000 volumes. Both
buildings have recently undergone complete internal renovations.
Ballantine Hall and Woodburn Hall are popular
classroom sites. Ballantine is the largest academic building on campus and
is nine stories high. Woodburn, originally the Business School, now houses
both the Departments of Political Science and African Studies and has the
largest lecture hall on campus.
Franklin Hall is the setting for many of IU's administrative
offices, including the Office of the Registrar, Bursar, Parking
Operations, Student Financial Assistance, and Overseas Study.
