A Message from the Provost
Response to Tragedy at Northern Illinois University
February 20, 2008
John G. Peters
Office of the President
Northern Illinois University
DeKalb, IL 60115-2854
Dear President Peters, NIU Students, Faculty, and Staff:
The Indiana University Bloomington community was shocked and saddened at the tragic loss of life on the campus of Northern Illinois University last Thursday. Please know that our thoughts are with you, and we send our sincere condolences.
Our deepest sympathies go out to the families of the students who died, and our thoughts and prayers are with those recovering from injuries sustained in the attack. We understand how shaken the entire campus must be. We hope that, as the slow process of physical healing begins, the NIU campus and the DeKalb community can also begin a process of spiritual and psychological healing.
College campuses are special communities whose members enjoy a close bond of shared lives, hopes and dreams. As communities of learning, we devote much of our time to the highest ideals of human existence, and we feel a special kinship with those on other college campuses around the country and around the world.
The IU Bloomington campus responded to the tragic news of the shooting last week with a mixture of sadness and horror. Such random and senseless acts of violence can leave all of us feeling helpless and vulnerable. At this most difficult time, our concern is focused on you and your campus.
As the NIU family mourns, we hope it is some help to know that we mourn with you. If we can assist you in any way during this period of grief and healing, I hope you will not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
Karen Hanson
Provost and Executive Vice President
Indiana University Bloomington
