ArtsWeek 2012: Call for Creative Projects
For 28 years, ArtsWeek has celebrated the rich and vibrant arts on the Indiana University Bloomington campus and in the surrounding community. ArtsWeek 2012 continues the tradition of celebrating and showcasing IU and Bloomington’s astounding array of fine arts and performance arts, yet adds a special emphasis on reaching out to new audiences, and in particular, reaching out to Indiana University students.
ArtsWeek 2012 will bring together scores of exhibits and performances, from the refined artistic traditions for which IU is known throughout the world to the eclectic, professional-quality arts within the Bloomington community to the spontaneous artistic expressions found all about us. ArtsWeek 2012, which will be held in April, will include:
- The Festival: ArtsWeek 2012 will be kicked off on April 1, 2012, with an outdoor festival of arts, featuring al fresco performances ranging from orchestrated scenes from theatre productions to creative works conceived and produced by students and community artists.
- The Happenings: Throughout the first week(s) of April, creative works will “pop up” throughout campus and the community. Film projections on a campus building, a flash mob on your way to class, a cappella singing on a street corner, contemporary dancers in a campus plaza, a sculpture in process—quite frankly, we will not know what will be on the menu for ArtsWeek 2012 until you tell us what you want to do, but we do know that art will be “happening” all around us.
- The Events and Exhibits: ArtsWeek would not be complete without showcasing the grand artistic and cultural traditions of our campus and community: our world renowned musical productions, performances by students who will be the stars of tomorrow, theatre productions including original works and old favorites, and art exhibits of the old masters as well as the new. Performances and exhibits occurring throughout the month of April will be promoted as part of ArtsWeek.
Invitation to Participate: We welcome and encourage interested artists and arts organizations from Indiana University and the Bloomington community to join in celebrating ArtsWeek 2012 by:
- Applying to participate as one of the events in the ArtsWeek 2012 Festival and/or Happenings;
- Applying for an ArtsWeek grant to create a new work; enhance a currently scheduled performance, exhibit, or event; reach out in creative ways to attract new audiences; or design an innovative way to promote ArtsWeek events; or
- Telling us what you have planned in April so that we can include you in the promotional material that will be distributed at the Festival, at all the Happenings, and through ArtsWeek social media.
ArtsWeek Grants: Please tell us your ideas! Grants are available from $50 to $2500 to support creative projects. All funded projects must involve Indiana University students in some significant way—in the design, implementation, or final production, or through the provision of ticket incentives or supplemental events that encourage IU students—preferably students who are not already avid arts fans—to attend a performance, event, or exhibit. Also encouraged, but not required, are campus-community collaborations and interdisciplinary works. Projects that promote ArtsWeek 2012 or its events to student audiences and other new audiences would also be welcomed. (Note: Student groups applying for funding must have a faculty sponsor.)
The deadline for ArtsWeek 2012 proposals is January 27, 2012. Applicants will receive notification regarding their application no later than February 3.
