Summer Intensive Program for Hindi and Urdu
SIPHUR
India Studies Program

Indiana University-Bloomington
June 13 – July 11, 2008

SIPHUR is funded by STARTALK, one of the projects of the National Security Language Initiative that is aimed at increasing the number of Americans learning critical-need foreign languages, such as Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Hindi, Persian, and others.

SIPHUR is an intensive four week Hindi/Urdu course that would be equivalent to one semester of university-level instruction in Hindi/Urdu. Each class meets for four hours a day five days a week. Students will also engage themselves in various cultural activities in and out of class. SIPHUR is targeted at middle and high school students who are of Indian/Pakistani backgrounds or anyone who has an interest in the languages and cultures of India/Pakistan. This program will be a bridge to connect junior and senior high school education to a University education. Students will benefit from the program as it will provide students a valuable chance to start early foreign language learning. Students of Indian/Pakistani backgrounds will have the opportunity to take a first step toward learning about their heritage and connecting themselves to their relatives in India/Pakistan.

The door is wide open to anyone who has an interest in the target language and culture, and a commitment to immersing themselves in the summer language instruction. SIPHUR is a residential program, and meals and lodging will be FREE for those selected for the program.
