IC Director Presents in Macedonia

IC director Karen Hallett and Bob Appelman, an IST faculty member, were recently invited to Tetovo, Macedonia by the South East European University to conduct a week-long workshop for five faculty departments. This workshop focused on transforming teaching practices to encourage active student participation and critical thinking, and to integrate the use of instructional technology.  South East European University was established by the United Nations in 2001 to provide higher education in three languages:  Albanian, Macedonian, and English.  This was done in response to a legacy of ethnic conflict in the area, and particularly to the issue of historically limited possibilities for the ethnic Albanian minority (23% of the population) to obtain education in their native language.  Indiana University, in cooperation with US AID and World Learning, Inc, an NGO, has been instrumental in the establishment of an instructional support center and related resources which will support faculty as the university undergoes curricular and pedagogical transformation.
