Hotel rooms & rates:

http://www.iub.edu/~homeland/images/clip_image002.gif The Indiana Memorial Union offers top quality hotel and meeting space, restaurants, IU book & gift stores, bowling alleys, pottery studios, and so much more.  Visit the IMU @:  http://www.imu.indiana.edu/hotel/  The IMU is located in the center of Indiana University, Bloomington.  We’re the “flagship campus” of the IU system and also a Big Ten University.  The IMU is offering us greatly discounted room rates, only $109 (1 double bed) or $149 (2 double beds) plus 11% tax.  This rate is per night, for occupancy of 1-4 folks, and includes free on-campus parking for overnight hotel guests, no pets allowed.

Please reserve IMU hotel rooms early.  The block of rooms will be gone in early spring semester.  And the room rate is guaranteed at this price until April 8, 2008.  If there are any rooms left at that time, the block will be released and the prices may increase.

Air travel & automobile tips:

If you can drive your own car and choose to use the Indiana Memorial Union, your parking is included & free. Otherwise, parking on campus is not free, and spaces are tight on Thursday & Friday.

If you plan to fly, we recommend Indianapolis Airport, only 50 min. away, with dozens of shuttles daily to/from the IMU as well as shared limos with low pricing.  We urge you not to rent a car at the airport, as moving it and re-parking on campus is hard.  We are a pedestrian-friendly campus, and you’ll not have to walk more than 10 minutes for a meal out.

Things to do:

If your spouse or partner wishes to attend or if you need to get away from all of us for an hour, there are many wonderful things to do near campus.  Upon request we can arrange small group tours of the campus itself, or visit the Art Museum or nearby Lilly Library (they’ve shown everything from Jack Kerouac’s scroll to Sylvia Plath’s letters).  We can provide a free gym pass to the student’s “HPER” building across the street.  On Saturday morning the Farmers' Market is a great tradition with good music & locally-grown foods.  It’s held from 7 to noon in downtown Bloomington (a 20-minute walk from the IMU hotel down 7th St.).  You can get there at seven and still make it back to the hotel in time for the first class at nine.  Bloomington is home to the only Tibetan Cultural Center in the nation, with two Buddhist monasteries and two chortens blessed by His Holiness the 14th Dali Lama (and across the street from the Tibetan Center is the Mount Calvary Baptist Church – we’re a truly diverse town in so many ways!)

Visit these additional web sites for further information both “town & gown”:

For those staying a day or two after the meeting:  You’re invited to spend a day in historic Brown County Indiana – Only 20 miles from campus to visit the Artist’s Colony of Nashville.  See dozens of quaint shops, restaurants, and art galleries.  Visit:

Driving or Flying to the Homeland Insecurities Conference

Indiana Memorial Union@ Indiana University?

Here’s some campus & travel info…

 About Indiana University Bloomington

Indiana University's Bloomington campus is considered one of the most beautiful in the United States. Located in the heart of Bloomington, the University is a careful blend of traditional and modern architecture. The campus buildings, made of locally quarried limestone, add beauty and local charm to the scenic campus. The University offers the finest in opera, theater, music, and dance.

Situated in the rolling hills of southern Indiana, Bloomington is one of Indiana's most popular travel destinations. It is filled with the warmth and charm of a small town plus the cultural and recreational amenities of a major metropolitan city. Local restaurants include an impressive array of ethnic cuisine, many within a comfortable walking distance of the Indiana Memorial Union.

FLYING to Indianapolis Airport:  You can rent a car at the Indy airport, but parking it on campus is very costly, and walking distance to shops, restaurants & pubs is minimal.  We recommend a shared limo or a shuttle bus to the IMU.  Here are some details on each of them…

Shuttle Buses To and From the Indianapolis Airport

The Bloomington Shuttle Service provides regular transportation between the Indianapolis airport and Bloomington hotels for $25 each way.  It runs every 2 hours starting at 6:30 am and running until 10:30 pm.  You'll find a schedule on their web page at:  http://www.bloomingtonshuttle.com/airport.html  It’s a small shuttle bus, seats about 20, and the ride is about 50 minutes.  It will stop at a couple of dorms & hotels once you arrive in Bloomington, including the Indiana Memorial Union front door of the hotel lobby.  Phones:  locally, 812-332-6004 or toll free 1-800-589-6004  or reserve on their web site… they take cash or plastic!  A great service and price, but if you miss one, you’ll wait another 2 hours for the next one, yet it’s a really cheap deal.

Shared Limo Between Indianapolis Airport & Bloomington

Limo service is not as costly as you think…  The Classic Touch Limo Service is a Bloomington, IN business who does lots of IU conference business.  It provides good limo rates between the Indiana Memorial Union (IMU) and the Indy Airport.  A “shared limo ride” means the limo goes whenever you’re ready after your flight arrives and you’ve gotten your luggage.  It’s possible you may wait 10-20 extra minutes (at the most) for another person riding to Bloomington with you in a large limo – but at half the cost.  Sometimes you’re the only person, and it’s still the same low price.  A shared ride costs per person “one way for $49”  and the round trip is $80  (the gratuity is already included).  If you do the round trip, they pick you up at the IMU exactly 3 hours before your flight leaves Indy .  Call the local number:  812/ 339-7269  tell them you are attending an IU Conference  and you want the IU Shared Limo Rate. You’ll find more information at their web page at: http://www.classictouchlimo.com/airport.html  (Note:  They also have private limos for you and up to two friends for around $200 total / round trip.)

DRIVING to Bloomington:  As explained earlier, you can rent a car at the Indy Airport, but parking on campus is costly.  In addition, walking distance to shops, restaurants & pubs is minimal.  If you drive your own car or a rental car to campus, here are some parking details for you…

 Parking on the IU Campus

If you drive your car or a rental car to the conference, hotel guests of the Indiana Memorial Union may park in the IMU parking lot free of charge (value about $15 per day).  Simply show the parking attendant your room key to exit at no charge.  If you are “driving in to campus each day” and/or staying at another hotel off-campus, you have several options:

  • We are working to have a few volunteers for the conference to shuttle people in/out upon request from an off-campus hotel, but this is not firm, and we are really promoting the IMU if you can afford it by sharing a room with other participants.
  • Now there are several good taxi services between the IMU and other area hotels.
  • You can park at the IMU Parking lot as a guest for a fee, or at one of the following parking garages, all within walking distance of the IMU. Rates are $1.75 per half hour with a maximum of $15.50 per day.
    • Poplars Garage  (6th between Grant & Dunn)
    • 10th & Fee Lane Garage  (Corner of 10th Street and Fee Lane)

Note:  Parking on campus is severely limited and none of it’s free unless you’re a hotel guest at the IMU.  Campus is especially crowded on Thursday and Friday.  If you decide to park on campus, be sure to give yourself plenty of time to look for a parking space.  Park ONLY in pay lots or garages.  If you park in a spot requiring a university sticker, you could be ticketed or towed on Thursday or Friday.

Note:  The purple line leads you from the Indy 465 beltway to Bloomington via State Road 37.

Exception would be for Cincinnati and Louisville area folks… You can bypass Indy, and come in west on SR 46 via Columbus, Indiana email us at homeland@indiana.edu for more details on this…

DIRECTIONS to Drive to Bloomington:

If you are driving from the Indianapolis Airport and the 465 interstate beltway around Indy:

    • Stay in the right hand lane when exiting the airport

    • Turn right onto Interstate 465 South/70 East

    • Exit onto Indiana 37 South which is the “Harding Street” exit  (only a few miles from the airport, if you pass Indiana 37 South you have gone too far east and will have to turn around)

If you are driving from Illinois (Warning Do not go to Bloomington, IL)  or Michigan / Northern Indiana:

    • Exit to 465 South from 74 East or 70 East (if coming from southern Illinois) or from 65 South (if coming from Chicago area) or to 465 West from Indiana 31 (if coming from South Bend or Center Michigan)

    • Exit onto Indiana 37 South/Harding Street (if you pass Indiana 37 South you have gone too far east and will have to turn around)

If you are driving from northern or eastern Ohio

    • Exit to 465 South from 70 West (if coming from northern Ohio) or to 465 West from 74 West (if coming from southern Ohio) or to 465 West from 65 North (if coming from Kentucky)

    • Exit onto Indiana 37 South/Harding Street (if you pass the exit for Indiana 67 South you have gone too far west and will have to turn around)

EVERYONE coming thru Indy:  Take State Road 37 South from Indianapolis. Approx. 45 miles south of Indy take the large Bloomington exit (SR 46 Bypass turning east) to “Indiana University” (you would be heading towards the IU Football Stadium). A mile in on the bypass you will turn right onto College Avenue 2 blocks before the stadium.  Stay on College Ave (crossing major streets 17th, 10th , and then turn left onto East 7th Street and you’ll be driving into campus.  The IMU is at 900 E. 7th, and is on the right.
