Academic advising is a key to your success as an undergraduate at IU. Each major in the College is assigned an
academic advisor. While you have the primary responsibility for making academic choices and planning your studies,
your advisor will help you take full advantage of opportunities at IU. You need to meet with your advisor each
semester before registering for courses for the upcoming academic term. Your advisor can also refer you to support
services on campus, such as tutoring in academic subjects, personal counseling, and time management assistance.
You're encouraged to keep in touch with your advisor often, in person or by phone or e-mail.
Advising for Freshmen
Most freshmen at IU begin their studies in the University Division, which provides academic advising. Students with
a strong high school background and an interest in majoring in the College of Arts and Sciences may be admitted
directly to the College at the beginning of their freshman year through the Direct Admit program. As a Direct Admit
student, you'll have an advisor in your major, a faculty mentor, and opportunities to become involved with your
department as a freshman.
