Research Competition

Nomination Form
Print this form, fill it out, and mail it to Tina Gilliland.

Purpose

To provide an opportunity for students conducting original scientific investigations to present their work publicly and to receive recognition for their achievement.

Nomination

Up to FIVE students may be nominated from each school. If a project is a large group collaboration for which no one student can be assigned primary responsibility, you may apply to make a public presentation of the research as a group, but it is not appropriate to enter a group in this competition. Please contact the director for further information.

Preparation
The student must complete and return the nomination form and email an extended abstract and an AJAS version abstract of an original field or laboratory research project he or she has conducted by the October 1, 2008 deadline. Email abstracts as an attachment in either Microsoft Word or WordPerfect to Tina Gilliland at mgillila@indiana.edu. Please note that only the extended abstract will be judged. The AJAS version will be printed in the program booklet.
Presentation
The presentation cannot exceed 10 minutes in length. The presenter may use are slides or overheads or graphs, charts, and figures suitable for a professional poster session; display (max. h=4', max. w=6'). You may use PowerPoint however you must bring your own laptop and projector.
Selection
  1. From a review of the extended abstracts received with the nomination, 12 presenters will be selected by qualified, impartial judges. Only three students from any one school will be selected.


  2. All nominees and sponsors will be notified of the presenter selections by October 15, 2008.


  3. The student will make one presentation before a panel of judges.
Evaluation

30 points = Originality; creativity; background
40 points = Clearly stated purpose and procedures; quality and clarity of results and conclusion
30 points = Method of presentation; use and relevance of the display

Awards
  1. The twelve finalists will receive a cash award of $25.00.
  2. The three highest scoring research presentations will receive plaques.
  3. The overall winner will receive a plaque and a $1,000 scholarship from the Hoosier Association of Science Teachers. The scholarship can be used at any College or University within the state of Indiana.
