International Graduate Student Workshop SeriesBeginning in fall of 2005, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Graduate School and the Campus Writing Program have joined efforts to sponsor a series of workshops designed to help international graduate students write effectively. For the 2006-2007 academic year we will expand our offerings to include topics such as giving academic presentations and key strategies for improving pronunciation. These workshops will be announced both through the departments and through the Office of international Programs. Writing a Research Paper This workshop will focus on the research paper, examining the ideas of audience, purpose, organization, and style or voice. It will introduce the idea of reader expectations in discussing the purpose of each section of a research paper and the construction of effective arguments in papers of this type. Writing Effective Sentences and Paragraphs This workshop will again emphasize the idea of reader expectations, but in this workshop the focus will be on constructing effective paragraphs and sentences. Participants will discuss issues such as how to support a topic sentence with evidence, how to write explicit, concise, and objective sentences, how to avoid plagiarism, and how to proofread for grammatical errors. |
