Events

The Global Village sponsors several regularly occurring events and opens its doors for other internationally focused organizations to host events in the community as well. We encourage residents to get involved in planning Village activities, whether it is by participating in the Central Council, taking part in an organizing committee or individually leading projects. We also invite all Villagers to propose new programs that they would like to see happen in the community. In the end, the Village is the cumulative effect of your ideas and initiative.

Central Council is the elected Global Village student leadership group. The role of the Council is to set community goals, represent the interests of Village residents, plan activities for the year, manage programming funds, coordinate with GV staff and, in general, serve as a forum for exploring opportunities that will enhance the mission of the Village and the experience offered to its residents. The Central Council meets weekly.

Faculty Conversations Everyone is invited to participate in weekly conversations with invited guests – IU faculty, graduate or undergraduate students – during which we will discuss varying topics about world affairs . Conversations are announced by email and with posters each week so that you can see what’s going on and drop by if you’re interested.

International Studies Student Association strives to offer Indiana University student a forum to consider international issues and events and their impact on IU and the world. Sponsored by the International Studies major, the organization hosts special programs on a wide range of global, academic and professional development issues. ISSA meets weekly in the Village.

Language Opportunities IU teaches an unprecedented number of foreign languages – approximately 40 – including Native American, African, Near Eastern, Asian and Western languages. The list is truly impressive and, as a program of the College of Arts & Sciences, the Global Village has strong ties to the foreign language departments. Villagers are routinely informed of language department conversation tables and related events. With over a dozen languages studied by Villagers, it is also common practice to coordinate activities with the respective departments.

Movies in the Lounge International films from all over the world are screened at the GV. Occasionally, faculty and/or graduate students join us to provide a backdrop to the film. If you have suggestions for films to show, please drop them in the suggestion box in the lounge or send the suggestions by e-mail to a Village staff or Central Council member.

Village Dinners Once a month the Village will host an international dinner in the Lounge. There are many excellent ethnic restaurants in Bloomington – Afghan, Tibetan, Moroccan, Indian, Peruvian, to name a few – and these dinners will be catered by them. These dinners may coincide with other special events at the Village, and we encourage all Village residents to attend.
