What is the Global Village?
The Global Village, IU’s newest living-learning center, is an undergraduate residence committed to preparing students with a broad range of international interests, regardless of major, for life beyond the United States. Open to all IU students, freshman through senior, the Global Village is a great place to enjoy internationally focused activities; meet faculty and others who have lived, traveled and worked overseas; improve your foreign language skills or just talk about the world with other students who share your interest in global issues.
Comprised of approximately 150 students, the Village strives to create a close-knit community that is diverse and respectful. What connects the residents is their desire to understand global society and their place in it, as well as the likelihood that they will study abroad at some point during their IU experience. In keeping with that objective, one major attraction for Village residents is the opportunity to room with someone with similar language and cultural interests. Yet, with more than a dozen languages studied by Village residents, you will routinely be exposed to others with an array of perspectives and experiences.
The ultimate mission of the Global Village is to expand student knowledge of world affairs and foreign languages and cultures, prepare students for travel overseas and assist students in accessing IU’s and Bloomington’s many international resources. With the help of a dedicated staff and the support of the College of Arts and Sciences the Village creates opportunities for students to prepare themselves for global living in the 21st century.

What’s life like in the Village?
When you live in the Village, there’s always a new experience right outside your door! Enjoy an exclusive breakfast with a CIA Field Officer, talk about nuclear arms over dessert with an IU professor, watch the latest Japanese anime with friends, sample Tibetan cuisine or learn to polka. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. You can plan a trip to nearby cities like St. Louis or Chicago, participate in a video conference with university students in Tanzania or take a class about Islamic culture in the comfort of a Village classroom. No matter your international interests or experience, there is something for everyone in the Village!
What makes Village events so successful is the fact that you, the students, are in charge of deciding the activities of the community and helping put them on. Villagers are an active group who are always thinking up new ways to get involved, whether it be through Central Council – the community’s leadership group – serving as a language tutor or by joining a campus-wide organization like the International Studies Student Association. The Village is a place where you can try different things and hone your leadership skills, while at the same time learn more about the world we live in.

Who lives in the Village?
The Global Village prides itself on being a multilingual, multinational, multicultural and multidisciplinary residence.
The Village welcomes all globally-minded undergraduates, from freshmen through seniors, regardless of major. It’s the ideal residence for students preparing for or returning from study abroad, who are studying foreign languages
and cultures or other internationally focused majors, or who are simply curious about world affairs.
Villagers are of diverse backgrounds and nationalities and pursue various majors, including fields like international studies, foreign languages, music, international business, journalism and social and natural sciences. Various languages are studied by residents—from Urdu to Spanish to Japanese. In fact, it is not uncommon for Villagers to be enrolled in more than one language at a time. Very often, residents become interested in new languages through contact with their friends in the Village or by meeting visiting faculty. Ultimately, most residents will spend time abroad at some point during their college career, always with the promise that they are welcome to return to the Village upon their arrival back at IU.

Are there any requirements to live in the Village?
Any admitted IU student, freshman through senior, can apply to live in the Global Village.
Previous international experiences and language skills are helpful but not required to live in the Village; this is a place where you can learn those things. Selection to live in the Village is based on an expressed interest in international issues and activities.
All students new to the Global Village are required to enroll in Q199, a one-credit, peer-taught course that serves as an introduction to the community and IU’s international resources and as a forum for discussing world affairs.
Where is the Global Village located?
The Global Village is a part of Foster Quad in IU’s northwest neighborhood, a short walk to the center of campus. The Village is a coed community made up of approximately 150 students. Living in mostly double rooms, Villagers enjoy air conditioning, exclusive access to a language-computer lab and kitchen facilities. The building is wireless ready and there are two classrooms located in the Village where internationally focused courses are offered.
What is the cost?
Most of the rooms in the Village are doubles and double room rates apply. Doubles-as-single rooms and the corresponding room rate may be available for sophomores, juniors or seniors. In addition to the room charge there is a student activity fee of $100 per semester that supports special programs organized within the Village by its residents.
