College of Arts and Sciences Policy Committee Minutes

November 26th, 2007

Present: Tom Busey (chair), Nick Cullather, Deborah Cohn, Sandra Dolby, Hal Evans, Jeff Hart (recorder), Dale McFadden, Brian Steensland, and Maxine Watson.

The meeting began at 4:15pm.

The Dean was unable to attend.

Most of the meeting was devoted to a discussion of non-tenure-track (NTT) faculty. As a result of an earlier meeting, the committee requested documentation on the number of NTT faculty relative to tenure-track (TT) faculty in the College. The College provided a table prepared by the Office of the Dean of the Faculty enumerating the number of faculty eligible for the Trustees’ Teaching Award with information on the number of NTT and TT full time equivalents (FTEs) by department and comparisons with other units at Bloomington. The table did not include part-time faculty, clinical rank faculty, or visiting faculty. According to this table, the percentage of FTEs accounted for by NTT faculty in the College was less than fifteen percent. Some departments had higher percentages, though, and much of the discussion focused on possible explanations for this and what, if anything, to do about it.

The committee identified two issues connected with the employment of NTT faculty: the potential for exploitation and the question of teaching supervision and quality. In previous years, the committee had asked some NTT faculty members to visit and tell about their experiences. The committee learned that there were already reasonable policies in place but that both chairs/directors and the NTT faculty themselves were not always fully aware of these policies. The committee decided to ask some chairs and directors to visit us and to provide information about NTT faculty and AIs later in the spring semester.

The meeting was adjourned at 6:00pm.

Jeff Hart, Recorder
