College of Arts and Sciences Policy Committee MinutesApril 14, 2008Present: Dale McFadden (chair), Tom Busey, Deb Cohn, Nick Cullather, Sandy Dolby, Jeff Hart (recorder), Brian Steensland, and Maxine Watson. The meeting began at 4:00pm. There was a discussion of the upcoming vote (April 23-25) on General Education requirements for the College. The committee then discussed a number of other items: services for students with disabilities on campus, procedures for renumbering courses, and CPC elections. The Dean arrived at 4:30pm. He asked the committee for recommendations for dynamic speakers at upcoming events for alumni in New York and Chicago. Five additional events will be held next year. The committee suggested that the Dean consult with the administrators of the Mini University. Another suggestion was that the Dean might consider meeting with alumni at large national meetings of organizations like the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The Dean was asked about the status of outside offers. He said that there were quite a few but that only three members of the faculty so far had agreed to accept offers. Market adjustments were helping to retain faculty who might otherwise seek or accept offers from other institutions. The Dean said that there will be a meeting of chairs and directors at the end of April that will deal primarily with the College budget. The committee will be sending members to that meeting. The Dean left at 5:00pm. The meeting was adjourned at 5:15pm. Jeff Hart, Recorder Questions or comments regarding the minutes and actions of the College Policy Committee may be addressed to its Chair, Dale McFadden.
