College of Arts and Sciences Policy Committee Minutes

March 24, 2008

Present: Dale McFadden (chair), Deb Cohn, Nick Cullather, Sandy Dolby, Hal Evans, Brian Steensland, and Maxine Watson (substitute recorder)

The meeting began at 4:00 pm.

The committee devoted a considerable amount of time to discussing the degree to which material presented by visitors to the CPC could or should be held in confidence at their request.  The committee decided that visitors should be given an opportunity to comment on (but not to approve or disapprove) the draft minutes of the meeting that they attended.  A suggestion also was made that visitors be queried prior to their appearance before the committee regarding their specific goals for the meeting.

A question was raised by a CPC member regarding the sources of the on-line policy statements on gender bias and on the role of the humanities and social sciences within COAS. It was learned that prior CPCs had formulated these statements in response to perceived needs to show concern and support for these issues.  We then discussed whether other topical issues deserve similar treatment by the CPC.

The committee reviewed the status of candidates for the upcoming CPC election.

A discussion was started on the advisability of formulating policy regarding the disciplinary structure of the college’s tenure and promotion committees.

The meeting ended with identification of policy issues that were raised by departments and programs in this year’s budget planning process.

The meeting adjourned at 5:50 pm.

Maxine Watson, Acting recorder
